Meanwhile Back on the Farm
My body of work is a set of six plates, all with farm animal silhouettes carved and inlaid into them. This body of work was inspired by both my love of animals and a recent stay at an AirBNB in Wintergreen, which was decorated with the white rustic farm vibe. Inspired by this aesthetic, my goal for these plates is to demonstrate my freehanding skills and my love for farm life. I hope to one day live on a farm with my own animals and I would want these plates to fit in perfectly with their slightly antique look and cohesive quality of simple black and white coloring. These plates are both functional and can be used as decoration. The way that I made all the plates was first, I threw and trimmed the plates on the wheel, and then once the plates were dry enough I used a googled silhouette as a reference photo and freehanded the animals onto each plate’s surface. I put black underglaze into the grooves of the drawing and then used a wet sponge to wipe the excess off the top, leaving clean lines of glaze. I then bisque fired them and then after that put on clear glaze and fired them again. This was a great last semester of Ceramics and I’m really proud of how my final pieces turned out.
Pieces That Were Not Shown in the Art Show:
Slip Trailing Bowl
One of the different assignments during this semester was doing a different form of surface design on a piece. I chose to try and do slip trailing which is when you put a color glaze into slip and use a little pipette or in my case a glue bottle, to squeeze the lines or dots onto the surface of your piece. The piece has to be at least leather hard when you put the slip trails on so that they stick to the moisture but I learned that the hard way. This was supposed to be a cohesive dinner set with a plate and a bowl but the slip didn't stick to the plate so I had to scrape it of and I just made it a plain white plate. I liked the plate though because it was a large dinner plate with really good thin trimming.

Pedestal Lidded Form Piece
This pedestal and lidded form piece was the most difficult piece that I have ever done simply because of the amount of steps it took for me to make it. I had never even attempted to make a cylinder before this and it was quite the challenge. Th lid was fine to make but I made it at the wrong time when the cylinder was already shrunken so the lids lip is a little bit to small and the whole piece was a little bit too wide. For the pedestal part, I made three solid spheres of clay and once they were leather hard I took a carving took and hollowed them out and then stuck them to the bottom of my piece. Unfortunately I don't have any more recent photos of this piece.
